Common character limits

  • SEO title 0 / 60 · 60 left
  • Meta description 0 / 155 · 155 left
  • SMS 0 / 160 · 160 left
  • YouTube title 0 / 100 · 100 left
  • Instagram caption 0 / 2,200 · 2,200 left
  • LinkedIn post 0 / 3,000 · 3,000 left

Approximate: X counts links as 23 characters and some emoji as 2; an SMS with accents or emoji fits only 70 characters; search engines truncate by pixel width, not characters.

Meta description

For short snippets, watch the characters-with-spaces count: search engines usually show around 150–160.

Social media post

The limits section shows how many characters you have left for X, Instagram, LinkedIn or an SMS as you type.

Limits, formulas and assumptions

  • Any run of letters or digits counts as a word; “e-mail” and “don't” count as one.
  • Characters are counted as a person sees them: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
  • Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line; sentences end with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis.
  • Reading time is an average and depends on the reader and how hard the text is.
