What it does: URL slug generator

The slug is the readable last part of a URL, like “perfect-omelette” in example.com/recipes/perfect-omelette. A good slug is short, descriptive and uses only letters, numbers and hyphens.

This tool normalises accents and special characters (é → e, ñ → n, ß → ss), replaces & with “and”, removes symbols and trims at a word boundary if you set a length.

How to use it

  1. Paste the title of your page or article.
  2. Choose the separator (hyphens are recommended for SEO).
  3. Optionally remove stop words and limit the length.
  4. Copy the slug into your CMS.

Examples

Blog post

“How to make the perfect omelette?” → “how-to-make-the-perfect-omelette”; removing stop words → “how-make-perfect-omelette”.

Shop product

“Kids' T-shirt Boys & Girls 100% cotton” → “kids-t-shirt-boys-and-girls-100-cotton”.

Limits, formulas and assumptions

  • Stop words are removed according to the page language (English or Spanish).
  • Trimming never leaves half a word or a trailing separator.
  • Changing the slug of a published page breaks existing links: if you do, set up a 301 redirect.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphen or underscore?

Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs. Underscores are more common in file and variable names.

Is it bad to keep accents in URLs?

They work, but they get encoded as %C3%A9 when copied and become hard to read. It's better to normalise them.

What's the ideal length?

There's no official limit, but 3 to 6 words is usually descriptive and easy to share.
